5th Grade Math Classroom Decorations and Back to School Ideas

The beginning of the year is the time to get to know students and let them know what they can expect for the year. Engaging students and learning about their interests the first day can get the year off to a great start.

I’ve gathered some of my favorite resources for back to school. Included are ideas to set up your fifth grade math classroom to be an inspiring setting for learning, activities for the first day, and routines we can establish from day 1.

I hope these resources and ideas help you have a great start to your school year!

Interactive Place Value Chart

This visual on a classroom wall is great for 5th graders. You can use it to teach relationships and meanings of the different place values.

5th Grade Math Sign

Each letter of this sign has a topic students will learn in 5th grade math. It’s the perfect way to preview all the math concepts students will learn!

Door Decoration

This door decoration kit welcomes students and involves math concepts. A win-win!

Math Calendar

A math calendar is the perfect way to incorporate math into classroom decorations. Each day is represented with a math problem. This math calendar gives students a fraction problem to solve each day.

First Day Activities

Fraction Group Challenge

Get students working together at the beginning of the year with this collaborative activity! Students work in groups of 4, but each student must complete their own sheet finding equivalent fractions. Once complete, the sheets come together to make an image.

Welcome to Math Booklet

Grab these get-to-know-you booklets to help you learn about your students the first day. They can color and fill in the pages with information about themselves.

Prepare for a Great Year

5th Grade Bell Work

This set of bell work exercises can get you started for the year. Each one is designed to get students thinking about the meaning behind the math. The problems include a review of previous grade level concepts and 5th grade material.

Standards Checklists

Use these checklists to help students see which standards and concepts they have learned throughout the year. (These are free to download!)

Mental Math Fluency Exercises

Building fluency is crucial to success in math. With this set of mental math prompts for the entire year, students get to learn new strategies and understand how they work. Implement a number talks routine at the beginning of the year with these quick, ready-to-go lessons.

I hope these ideas are helpful as you start your year of teaching 5th grade math.

Have a great school year!
